Nerja is a small town located in the province of Málaga, in the south of Spain. It is a perfect town to relax. When you visit this area you will feel as if you entered a tropical resort. Semi-tropical fruits grow here, such as mango and papaya. There are widespread avocado plantations since this is one of the major avocado growing regions in Europe. The town is situated on a fairly steep hill. It has several small beaches set in coves beneath cliffs.
When you walk through the small town of Nerja you will probably end up at the most famous spot: Balcon de Europa, or Balcony of Europe.
It is a favorite spot with both locals and visitors. Located in the center of Nerja's historic part of town it has breathtaking views out to the Mediterranean Sea. The balcony is lined with palm trees and flanked to the left by beautiful white arches.
The Balcón de Europa was made famous by King Alfonso XII and his statue can be found at the far end. The story goes that in history people believed this was literally the end of the world, since you really see nothing but beautiful sea. At night the Balcón de Europa comes alive with artists, odd musician and is a place where people just wander to relax and soak up the atmosphere.
The town has 400 restaurants, bars, cafés and five supermarkets and many mini-marts spread around town. Nerja does not have any large stores of the main chains of shops in Spain. This makes the town way cuter and more relaxed than any other city in the area. Another big difference is the way the beaches are formed. You will not find long beaches packed with people in Nerja. A lot of coves create many small “private” beaches. All you have to do is pick your favorite cove and lay down. Surrounded by cliffs you will feel as if you are almost alone on the planet!
