Colca Canyon

You’re probably not traveling to Peru to see a canyon, but the Colca Canyon is a must see. This place is unique because the gap is twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in America ánd you can spot condors over here!

Must See
The Colca Canyon is a five hour drive away from Arequipa. It's a beautiful drive and during it you can admire the ingenious Pre-Inca terraces, snow peaks and local farmers. Once you are there, you are standing 3501 meters high. The canyon is perhaps twice as deep as the Grand Canyon,  but the walls are not as straight. The strange shapes of the landscape of this canyon is also easy to find on satellite photos. The name Canyon Colca comes from the holes in the gaps. These are called colca and this is where the Incas and pre-Incas kept their food for bad times. They were also used as tombs for important people.

At the Cruz del Condor you find the home of the Andean condor, a species which is protected worldwide. But here you have the chance to see them in their natural habitat. The birds mostly fly through the gap in morning and evening, since they are the hunting the rest of the day. If you're lucky, you can see the birds at five meters distance.

The Colcavallei is a colorful area with villages that have been discovered by the Spaniards. The locals here still adheres to the old traditions and ways of life and still make use of the agricultural terraces.
